Such A Pretty Girl - by Laura Wiess
Lindsay Gordon
Carly Comito
Haley Schaumberger
Jen Schubert
Reading Scheduele:
We plan to read 70 pages each week.
The First Page:
From the first page, we can see that the author is writing in the first person. The main character is a smoker, and seems to be unhappy, and pessimistic. The book, from the first page, seems interesting.
11.29.11
Next week, we will all have read up to chapter 13. We will come into class prepared with a prediction of what we think will happen next.
---- Predictions ---- 12.5.11
Haley _ Meredith is very upset about her father coming home and is afraid of him. She thinks that he is going to molest her and believes that her mother isn't protecting her well enough. Also in the end Andy won't be in a wheelchair because the spiritual lady in Iowa will fix his legs and take away his "pain" (He is paralyzed so he doesn't really have pain).
Jen _ After Andy travels to Iowa to meet with the spiritual lady his legs will somehow get fixed whether it is a life changing operation or a miracle. When Andy returns he gets Meredith pregnant and they run away together away from Meredith's dad.
Carly _ I think Meredith is going to take her camera to the police station that contains the recording between her and her father who was touching her inappropriately. She is going to do everything she can to get her father arrested and out of her life. Meredith is also very unhappy about her mother and father trying to have a baby. She believes that that is the last thing she needs in her life right now.
Lindsay _ My prediction is that Meredith will continue to have issues with her father's homecoming. She will continue to lash out, and it will not prevent her father from continuing on his mission of molestation. I also think that Andy will come back from Iowa unfixed and still in a wheelchair.
~ Today we had some confusion about the flashbacks, but we combined our ideas together to figure out what was happening, and make sense of the story.
Summary
The story is mainly about a 15 year old girl, Meredith. Her father is supposed to be in jail for 9 years, and right now, it's been 3. He is being let out because of his good behavior in the detention center, and Meredith is horrified. Her mother, on the other hand, is thrilled. With a previous history of molestation to more than one child, Meredith, along with the rest of the neighborhood, does not want anything to do with his homecoming or his person. The only safety that Meredith has in her life is her neighbor, who is also her boyfriend. However, his paralysis takes him to Iowa overlapping the timing of Meredith's mother ignoring the fact that her father is a threat, and her dangerous father's return to her life.
